CK-FMS

The CK-FMS (Certified Kettlebell—Functional Movement Screen) program monitors an individual’s movement patterns and identifies weak links that are more likely to lead to injury. After screening an individual for movement imbalances, an exercise program can be developed to correct imbalances and strengthen weak links in the movement chain, thereby reducing the likelihood of injuries.
By screening these patterns, you can successfully and quickly identify functional limitations and asymmetries. Basic movement pattern limitations can reduce the effects of functional training, physical conditioning, and distort proprioception (body awareness).
In short, by screening movement patterns, we can determine why individuals say, “That is my weak side,” or “I can’t balance on that side,” and then correct those issues.
“Working on any other part of the chain will not change the strength of the chain,” says Gray Cook, MS, CSCS, PT, developer of the screen. “You’re only going to be a good as your weakest link. If you insist on using band-aids and duct tape, don’t be surprised when things start to rip and tear!”
Studies have shown that National Football League players who score poorly on the screen are have a greater chance of injury than players who have no movement issues. In fact, the Indianapolis Colts require players to correct imbalances and weaknesses BEFORE they set foot on the playing field.
“Everything we do at the Indianapolis colts is built on a Functional Movement Screen base,” says Jon Torine, Colts Strength and Conditioning Coach. “It’s the foundation of our program.”
The program is also being used by the U.S. Navy, PGA, NHL, many NCAA programs and many police and fire departments nationwide. Basically, when injuries cost money, the screen has become a valuable tool to help prevent those injuries.
Dave Clancy is one of only two CK-FMS practitioners in the state of Ohio. In addition to using the screen to help keep his athletes on the field, he uses it to help regular people live their lives pain free. “If I can find out what is causing a client to have repeated injuries, and help him correct it, he will be more likely to stay active, and therefore healthier.”
